1. Objective of the Game

  • The aim is to score goals by throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal.

  • The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.


2. Teams

  • Each team has 7 players in the water:

    • 6 field players

    • 1 goalkeeper

  • Teams may have substitutes who can change during breaks or after a goal.


3. Starting the Game

  • The game starts with the ball in the centre of the pool.

  • On the whistle, players swim from their goal line to try to gain possession.


4. Ball Handling

  • Field players may use only one hand to hold or throw the ball.

  • The goalkeeper may use two hands inside their goal area.

  • Players cannot touch the bottom of the pool.


5. Moving with the Ball

  • Players may swim with the ball, but cannot carry it underwater.

  • The ball must stay on or above the water when moving.


6. Scoring

  • A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line.

  • Goals can be scored by throwing or tapping the ball.


7. Fouls

Minor Fouls

  • Holding or pushing an opponent without the ball

  • Splashing in an opponent’s face

  • Taking the ball underwater when challenged

Result:

  • The opposing team gets a free pass.

Major Fouls

  • Pulling a player backwards

  • Kicking or striking another player

  • Holding, sinking, or pulling back a player who has the ball

Result:

  • The player is excluded for 20 seconds, and the other team has a power play.


8. Goalkeeper Rules

  • Goalkeepers wear a different coloured cap.

  • They can:

    • Use two hands

    • Punch the ball away

  • They cannot cross halfway in most school games.


9. Game Length

  • School games are usually played in 4 quarters.

  • Each quarter lasts 3–5 minutes, depending on time and fitness levels.


10. Safety & Fair Play

  • No pushing, dunking, or grabbing around the head or neck.

  • Players must listen to the referee’s whistle.

  • Respect opponents, teammates, and officials.
