Pool Controllers

Welcome

Pool Controllers are an essential part of delivering safe, enjoyable and well-run Canterbury Water Polo competitions. As the first point of contact on competition nights, Pool Controllers help ensure games run on time, support referees, communicate with teams and create a positive experience for players, coaches and spectators.

Thank you for volunteering your time to help our competitions succeed.


Role of a Pool Controller

As a Pool Controller you are responsible for:

  • Setting up the competition area before games commence.
  • Welcoming teams, coaches and referees.
  • Managing the competition table and game clock.
  • Recording scores and entering results.
  • Ensuring games start and finish on time.
  • Supporting and mentoring referees throughout the evening.
  • Assisting with any competition enquiries.
  • Helping maintain a safe and positive environment around the pool.
  • Packing down equipment at the conclusion of the competition.

Before the Competition

Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled start time.

Before the first game:

  • Set up the competition table and chairs.
  • Prepare the game clock and ensure it is operating correctly.
  • Place score sheets and competition paperwork on the table.
  • Confirm referee appointments.
  • Check goals and competition equipment are ready.
  • Ensure teams know where they are playing.

During the Competition

Game Management

  • Keep games running to schedule.
  • Start and stop the clock as required.
  • Record scores accurately.
  • Update results after each game.
  • Communicate clearly with referees and coaches.

Referee Development

Developing referees is one of Canterbury Water Polo's highest priorities.

Please:

  • Welcome new referees.
  • Answer questions before and after games.
  • Provide positive and constructive feedback.
  • Encourage confidence and professionalism.
  • Escalate any rule queries to the Competitions Lead if required.

Remember that today's junior referees are tomorrow's national referees.


Working with Schools & Clubs

Pool Controllers are ambassadors for Canterbury Water Polo.

Please:

  • Wear your Canterbury Water Polo polo shirt.
  • Introduce yourself to coaches.
  • Be approachable and friendly.
  • Answer questions where possible.
  • Help create a welcoming environment for all participants.

Building positive relationships with our schools and clubs helps grow our sport.


Spectator Management

Pool Controllers also assist with creating a positive spectator environment.

Please:

  • Ensure spectators remain seated in the designated seating areas or grandstand.
  • Keep poolside clear where possible.
  • Politely address any behaviour that may affect games.
  • Contact the Competitions Lead immediately if any concerns arise.

Never place yourself in an unsafe situation.

Year 7 & 8 Competition

Monday4:00pm – 6:00pm

Friday6:30pm – 8:00pm

Winter Social League

Wednesday7:00pm – 9:15pm
